WAV Architects Recommends Collaborative Review of Proposed Zoning Changes

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

March 5, 2026 - Fairhope, Alabama: Drawing on 40 years of architectural practice in the community, the partners at Walcott Adams Verneuille (WAV) Architects are encouraging the Fairhope City Council to consider a 120-day extension for the review of Ordinance 1253. The firm suggests that this additional time would allow for a more thorough public dialogue and detailed modeling of the proposed changes to ensure they best serve the city's long-term vision.

We have long cherished the diversity and innovation that make Fairhope a remarkable place to live and work,” says Mac Walcott, founder and principal partner. “Our goal is to ensure that new regulations support this historic vibrancy while effectively managing the challenges of recent growth.

Constructive Areas for Further Discussion:

  • Residential Flexibility: WAV Architects suggests a more tailored approach to impervious surface limits, ensuring that homeowners in all neighborhoods maintain the ability to make reasonable improvements, such as adding garages or garden sheds.

  • Clarity for Property Owners: The firm recommends additional study to prevent existing homes from inadvertently becoming “non-conforming,” which could complicate future renovations for local families.

  • Balanced Growth: Further review could help ensure the ordinance supports a variety of housing types and maintains the economic vitality of the Central Business District (CBD).

The firm expresses its respect for the work of the Planning Commission and Staff and believes that public modeling of these solutions will build greater community consensus.

Fairhope’s future is a shared responsibility,” Walcott concludes. “A brief extension would provide the clarity needed to adopt an ordinance that protects both our environment and our unique architectural character.

Public Participation: The City Council is scheduled to discuss the ordinance this Monday at City Hall. Residents are invited to attend or share their feedback with council members to help shape this important legislation.
